In a car's engine the piston can not do crankshaft's job and the crankshaft can not do the connecting rod's job. A spark plug just do one thing and the same can be told about the rest of parts.
Software computer is more flexible, even so, Unix base system has a good and reliable policy, the famous KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid): a group of small programs where each one do just one thing and do it right. And gives you a way to combine these small programs to get more complex tasks done.
When I was studding violoncello at the music conservatory of my country, Argentina, I decided to give a try to a small luthier course that an old man gave on Saturdays. For those who don't know, a luthier is who make stringed instruments like violins or cellos. Some people get surprised when it is told that to make a violin's top a luthier starts from a square wood solid block; and gets the concavity by carving with gouges. He must get the same thickness on the whole surface, carving and controlling with a thickness caliper. This is a really hard craft task. I gave up after a month because I had not enough time. One day he told me that, when he was young, he lived and worked for some years in United States. He had a job in a piano factory with a wonderful wage. Why did he go back to Argentina? He got bore cutting piano keys the whole day. He was just one piece in a factory assembly line.
Modern society is like a machine. It forces individuals to do one thing and do it right like in the Unix KISS example. Of course, it is economically productive but what is good for machines it is not necessary good for humans. The problem is that, generation after generation, humans become more and more like pistons or spark plugs. Its ability to get adapted to different contexts, quality of all alive organisms, is day after day getting atrophied.
